Women in STEM Mini-Hack, Part II

In December, we teamed up with YouthCITIES to see if, as a community of innovators and out-of-the-box thinkers, we could hack about the bottlenecks leading to low percentage of women in STEM fields. In an intense discussion, we determined that there are quite a number of obstacles and stereotypes that contribute to the low ratio of women in STEM fields. This February, we're teaming up again to look at this deep-rooted problem, and come one step closer to addressing this issue. This is not something one person, or one group can combat. It’ll require an innovative community and possibly a paradigm shift. Lucky for us, we (as the Greater Boston/Cambridge) are the hub of innovation. So whether you are a teacher, a STEM professional, a teenager, or a parent, your perspective matters.

Women in Stem Mini-Hack

Women in science have come a long way since the days when the field was exclusively dominated by men. But a disappointing imbalance still exists in areas like engineering, where women comprise only 11% of engineers worldwide. Come share your ideas and help tackle this problem on 12/12 at the Women in STEM mini-Hack, organized by YouthCITIES and the New England Venture Capital Association. Our event will be held at KPMG, on the 15th floor of the Cambridge Innovation Center.

How Venture Capital is Getting Disrupted and What You Can Do About It . *Members Only Event*

Clay Christensen in his best-selling book “Innovator’s Dilemma” described how incumbents fail to innovate fast enough and consistently get disrupted by newcomers. As part of Harvard Business School research, Gaurav Jain looked at venture capital through the lenses of Christensen’s theory and concluded that venture capital is going through a similar disruption phase. Join us to hear Gaurav's latest research on how and why venture capital is getting disrupted and what incumbent firms can do about it. Gaurav interviewed notable entrepreneurs, VCs and LPs including Arthur Rock, Josh Kopelman and The Kauffman Foundation and found that successful investors are not resting on their laurels, but instead are evolving to accomodate the fast changing ecosystem. Gaurav Jain is a 2013 graduate of the Harvard Business School and is now a Principal with Founder Collective. Prior to business school, he was at Google where he was an early Product Manager for Android. He's also the Co-founder of Polar Mobile. Connect with other VC's, hear Gaurav's research and join us in a dialogue about what's next in venture capital. THIS IS A MEMBERS ONLY EVENT. Thanks to KPMG for hosting! And thanks to all of our members and sponsors who enable the work that we do.
